Changes to organization over time
The OpenAIRE project was commissioned by the European Commission to create a catch-all repository for EC funded research and launched the “Orphan” repository in 2010 for articles, and later extended the mandate to include data, at which point the service was extended, renamed and relaunched. Hence in May 2013, CERN and OpenAIRE partnered to launch Zenodo built on Invenio v3, wrapped by a small extra layer of code. To simplify reuse of the Zenodo codebase, several institutions have joined in 2019 to distribute an institution-agnostic package under the name of InvenioRDM.
